You Heard About It? - So What is Go Henry?

Go Henry is a combination of a pre-paid debit card for kids with parental controls that can be controlled by an app for a smartphone or tablet. I have been able to teach my kids so much using this app that I thought I would write a Go Henry Review. The creators of Go Henry have designed is specifically for kids aged between 8 and 18 years old. It’s free for 4 months when you sign up through this site and the card will arrive in roughly 7 days.

There is the mobile app but you can also manage the card through their website. Using the app or the we site you can easily monitor your child or teenagers spending and its also possible to top up the card from a parent account. It’s possible to set up regular weekly payment which can be used for pocket money or use it for one-off payments for special treats, rewards or special occasions like birthday or Christmas.

Go Henry Security Features

Once the card has arrived it comes with a PIN that can be changed and information on how to activate the card. Apple & Android devices are supported by the App, and from the App, it enables parents to monitor their kids spending and keep track of the balance on the card. Should something happen to the card like it gets lost or stolen the app or website can be used to deactivate the card by either the parent or the child. The card can be used in the UK or abroad wherever there is a Visa symbol. It is also a contactless card but it’s not a credit card. A child can only spend what is in their account. There are no overdrafts so it’s impossible to run up debt on the card.

Additional Security Feature

If you are a user of credit and debit cards you will be aware of the standard security features on these cards. Go Henry has all the same features. A big difference though is the parental controls that can be configured through the app or website, this includes the ability to when and where the card can be used. This feature means its far more secure than cash or a debit card linked to a current account, which is the alternative.

Go Henry has a list of establishments that they deem as not being child friendly and therefore the card cannot be used in the following:

  • Pubs, bars, nightclubs and some restaurants
  • Wine and beer wholesalers
  • Cigar and tobacco shops
  • Escort services and massage parlours
  • Automated fuel dispensers
  • Race tracks
  • Adult entertainment venues, websites or TV channels

In reality your child or teenager is unlikely to get served in one of these establishments but it’s good to have that extra reassurance.

TOP FEATURE - Smartphone & Tablet App

Within a couple of swipes you get a full overview of where things are up to.

What Are The Benefits of Go Henry?

Go Henry Benefits

I know first hand that Go Henry works as both of my children use the card. They have adopted the habit of taking their wallet with them and regularly checking their balance before deciding what to spend on and whether the item they would like is affordable.

Teaching children about money is not something that is taught all that well in schools and to be honest much of how we spend our money, is an emotional decision, which probably can only be learnt using experience.

The ability to ‘earn’ the pocket money is also a good life lesson to teach our kids.

Out of my two children one is a definite spender and the other a saver so Go Henry accommodates in teaching both of them. Savings goals for the spender and the ability to monitor spending for the saver so he doesn’t have to worry.

The fear that the money won’t last is one of those emotional relationships we have with money, but a sensible budget and realistic savings goals can take away those fears.

The worry when you have spent everything and how can you last the month? Is a common theme many adults live through.

Both of these are great lessons to learn before the world of bills, mortgages, credit cards and loans.

How to use the card

Go Henry Debit Vard

Once the card had arrived in the post, I then set up a standing order to transfer a set amount each week. The kids both know that payday is Friday of each week and quickly worked out that if they wanted to spend it all by Saturday, I wasn’t going to stop them.

The obvious thing happened, the spender blew it by Sunday and the saver seemed to enjoy looking at his balance.

They are both tech savvy kids as most kids seem to be these days so they worked things out for themselves very quickly. In fact it took me longer!! The smile on their face using their cards for the first time is something I won’t forget in a hurry.

Over time it’s been amazing to see how both kids have matured and it’s given me the confidence to put more money on the cards and trust them to makes purchases that I would normally do for them.

Go Henry Review Summary

Pros: From personal experience I grew up in an environment where we never had much money. So I was never taught how to manage it properly or to deal with the emotions that it brings.

As a result I have made some very poor financial decisions as an adult which hopefully my children won’t make the same mistakes.

Cons: It is possible to teach your kids without the need to buy technology
