If you’re traveling abroad on holiday, a prepaid currency card is a must have item to have with you. Rather than having to rely on your debit or credit card in a far off land and risk blowing your budget, you simply load up money on a currency card and away you go. If you happen to splurge and run out of funds, you can even reload online or over the phone. These cards and a safer and cheaper alternative to carrying cash. Read my FairFx Review to see how you can get the most from this currency card on your next trip abroad.
What are Travel Money Cards?
A travel money card, is like a debit or credit card, but there is a slight difference. With these cards you specify the currency that you would like the card in.
So if you are going on holiday to the United States, you would order a US currency card, pay in pounds to have the equivalent dollars loaded on to it. Then the card arrives in the post along with a secure PIN number.
So on that holiday to the US, you then have the equivalent of a US debit card. That means no fees for using it abroad, and no fees for withdrawing from a cash machine. You can't spend what you don't have on the card, so this is very different to a credit card. If you run out of cash on the card, you simply top it up using the internet or an app. The card can be used over and over again for multiple holidays.
The card is super convenient and great for the budget-conscious. These prepaid currency cards, like those offered by FairFX are what I use for all my trips abroad. This is because they can also provide surprising savings as well. For instance, with a FairFX currency card, there’s no charge whatsoever for transactions made overseas. In fact, there’s next to no fees at all!

Who are FairFx?
FairFX is a rapidly growing publicly traded financial services company based in London. Despite being in business for less than a decade, they have managed to help nearly one million travelers and retail clients. After revamping their website and creating a much more user-friendly online experience, FairFX has managed to double its client base in just the past year alone. By offering a great product at a great price and providing stellar customer service as well, they even managed to win a 2015 ADVFN International Finance Award for Best Currency Exchange Service.
With such rapid growth and reputation for being one of the best currency card providers in the industry, it’s not surprising that FairFX has been featured in a number of media publications, including The Independent and Daily Mail. The Telegraph even stated, “The best deals are usually through an online broker, such as FairFX.” I happen to agree.
I already knew of FairFX’s stellar reputation. However, after learning that it’s a publicly traded company on the London Stock Exchange, has won multiple awards, and has even been featured on a myriad of media channels, the firm’s currency cards have quickly become my top recommendation for travelers looking for honest FairFX reviews and payment solutions abroad.
• Founded in 2007
• Accepts worldwide clients
• Offices in the UK
• 41 currencies offered
• Regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority
• Great TrustPilot rating
• Website – www.fairfx.com
There are no fees for money transfers with FairFX. As far as currency cards go, there is a one-off fee of £9.95 for loading money onto a FairfFX currency card and a tiny $2 or £1 fee for making ATM withdrawals abroad. However, these fees only apply to clients who load less than £200 onto their FairFX currency card. Plus, when you take FairFX’s super competitive exchange rates into consideration, any fees are actually quite negligent.
How it Works
Signing up for a FairFX currency card is as easy as 1, 2, 3. Simply visit the company’s website, follow each of the links, and provide them with some basic information. The entire signup process literally takes just a few minutes.
After you’ve completed he signup process, your card will arrive in about seven business days. Once you’ve received your brand new FairFX MasterCard prepaid currency card, you simply log in to the FairFX website one more time and click on the “Activate” button at the top of the page. Just follow a few steps and your new card will be ready to load.
When it comes to topping up the card, there are several loading options available, including:
• FairFX site
• FairFX iOS or Android app
Remember, as long as you load at least £200, FairFX will waive the £9.95 load fee. I always seem to spend more than I budget when on holiday and need to load up additional funds, so this fee waiver is a nice bonus and a definite selling point.
After your new currency card is loaded and activated, you’ll be free to use whichever MasterCard option you choose wherever MasterCard is accepted, which is honestly everywhere.
While on the topic of MasterCard options, it’s important to note, the FairFX Euro and USD cards are the only ones without transaction fees on purchases and ATMs. If you opt for the FairFX Anywhere Card, you have the freedom of using the car anywhere MasterCard is accepted around the globe. However, there is a 1.4% transaction fee on all purchases.
Why Use a FairFX Currency Card?
As I explained earlier in this FairFX review, there’s a bevy of reasons to use a prepaid FairFX MasterCard when on holiday and travelling abroad. However, after traveling to countless countries and talking to hundreds of fellow travellers, the following three reasons seem to always pop up:
1. Prepaid Currency Cards are Safer Than Cash
Sadly, thousands of tourists are targeted by thieves and pickpockets each year when traveling abroad. With a FairFX currency card, you can carry little to no cash and prevent yourself from becoming yet another victim. Although travellers’ cheques offer a similar level of protection, they are more expensive and less convenient than currency cards.
2. Excellent Exchange Rates
As I mentioned above, FairFX has a history of providing some of the best exchange rates in the industry. As such, the exchange rate provided by FairFX consistently beats the rates offered by banks, hotels, and airports. If you’re keen on following the Forex market, you can reduce the exchange rates even more by loading your FairFX currency card when the rates are most favourable.
3. No Transaction Fees
When traveling abroad on holiday, using your credit or bank debit card can be quite expensive. Not only will you receive a higher exchange rate, but the exorbitant transaction fees you’ll rack up may put you in the poor house by holiday’s end.
With a FairFX currency card, however, you’ll be able to spend freely and confidently without worrying about costly transaction fees everywhere you shop, dine, or play.
My own experiences with FairFX currency cards have certainly been positive, so it’s no surprise that over 90 percent of the firm’s customers feel the same. With a respectable TrustPilot score of 8.5 out of 10 and hundreds of positive FairFX reviews, it’s obvious the ladies and gents at FairFX are doing something right.
Like myself, the majority of FairFX customers seem more than happy with the company’s services. There are literally hundreds of customer reviews and almost no complaints whatsoever. Moreover, most of the reviews praise FairFX’s pricing, speed, and customer support.
Although this alone says a lot about the company, the fact that representatives respectfully reply to each and every comment says even more. They actually seem to care about the experiences of their customers. Go figure.
Even unhappy customers seem to sing a different tune after talking with the FairFX’s patient and attentive staff. It’s not a Jedi mind trick. Great customer service is simply good business, and the professionals at FairFX seem to follow this mantra every single day.
If you’re traveling abroad on holiday, a FairFX Currency Card is truly a no-brainer. The company’s prepaid travel cards combine the safety and convenience of credit cards with industry-leading exchange rates and absolutely zero transaction fees for Euro and US Dollar Cards with balances of £200 or more. I personally couldn't ask for anything more. In an era of big business and exorbitant fees, the friendly, no BS approach of FairFX makes them a standout leader amongst currency card issuers.
Like what you hear? Simply sign up, load any amount on your card, and get ready to travel in ultimate convenience and peace of mind with a FairFX Currency Card today!.
